Established in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain name extension is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domains remained operational.
